Ziyad bin Labid Radhiyallâhu Anhu belonged to the Banu Bayaaza branch of Banu Khazraj tribe of the Ansar (the Helpers and local inhabitants of Madinah). He was born in Madinah al-Munawwarah. After embracing Islam, he went to Makkah al-Mukarramah and stayed with Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi Wa Sallam until Hijrah. Later, he made Hijrah (immigrated) to Madinah. Hence, he was one of the few Ashab (companions) who was both a Muhajir and an Ansar.
He participated in the Second Pledge of Aqabah, Battles of Badr, Uhud, Khandaq (Trench), and in all other expeditions that took place during the time of Rasulullah Sallallâhu Alayhi Wa Sallam.
He was appointed as the governor of Hadhramaut, and he passed away in the early years of the khilafat (caliphate) of Hadhrat Muawiya Radiyallahu Anhu. (Asma-al Ashab al-Badr)
Personalities like Abud Darda and Awf bin Malik Rahdiyallahu Anhuma from the Ashab (companions) and Salim bin Abul Ja’d Rahmatullahi Alayhi from the Tabi’in reported Hadith al-Sharif from him.
The report of Salim bin Abul Ja’d Radiyallahu Anhu is as follows: “Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi Wa Sallam spoke on something and said, “This will take place when knowledge is lifted,” and I asked, “O Prophet of Allah! How will knowledge be lifted while we have the Noble Qur’an in our hands? We are learning what is in it and teaching them to our wives and children. Our children will continue to teach their children until the Day of Qiyamah (Judgment).”
Then Rasûlullâh Sallallâhu Alayhi Wa Sallam said: “O Ziyad! I thought you were one of the best Faqih (jurist) of Madinah. Look at the Jews and Christians! They have their books in their hands, reciting their Tawrah and Injil. However, they stopped practicing what was in them until their religions became corrupted and they lost their religions.” (Sunan Ibn Mâjah)
Jubair bin Nufair Radiyallahu Anhu, another reporter of this Hadith al-Sharif, said: "I met Shaddad bin Aws from the Ashab at the Masjid (mosque) and I narrated this Hadith al-Sharif to him. He asked, ‘Do you know what lifting of the knowledge means?’When I replied I did not know, he said, ‘The disappearance of the Ulama (Islamic Scholars) who contain the knowledge.’ He further asked, ‘Well, do you know what will be the first to be lifted from knowledge?’ “I don’t know.” I said. He said, ‘It is khushu‘ (calmness, tranquillity). It will be such that you will see no one with khushu‘.”
